All-Time Best of Show
(EVER)
Demaris Swint
The Best of Show Award, as used over the years at some of our Courthouse Square Antique Postcard and Paper shows is presented to the best display of postcard collecting at that show. We have had competitive exhibits at some but not all of our shows, and we have been fortunate over the years to have a wonderful collector/dealer/organizer/volunteer/cheerleader at most all of the shows I have produced (and many others have been fortunate to have her at their shows as well.) For a number of years, in addition to her collecting skills and interests, she also walked the show floors handing out snacks for all to enjoy. She organized National Postcard Week swaps. She cooked meals for the collectors and dealers in Wichita. (Not just ‘one and done’, but every year she attended. My award for “ Best of Show “ would go to Demaris Swint, for all of her leadership, her kind nature, her deep knowledge of the diversity of the hobby and collectors, her organizing skills…..it could go on and on. She promoted the hobby like no other, whether it was serving the International Federation of Postcard Dealers(IFPD) as a past Secretary and Treasurer, and of course head cheer leader, or being the ‘keeper of the flame’ for National Postcard Week and International Postcard Week, or organizing countless “Post-Crossing” meet-ups in conjunction with our shows, providing and encouraging ‘cross over’ interests of the different generations of collectors.
Demaris will forever be our “Best of Show”
NO ONE, has come close to serving as she has.
Demaris passed away very recently. She will be missed by all who knew her. For all she did for all of us, for so many……She is my all-time favorite “Best of Show”, and we will retire that award at my shows. No one else could come close. Rest in Peace, Demaris. Thank you for being my friend.
....Jim Taylor

Postal History Rarities in Jim Mehrer's Sale 135
Several rare postal history items are offered in Jim Mehrer's Postal History Mail Bid Sale #135. Among the lots is the complete set of Pan-American Exposition "Zinkie Covers." In 1901, Frank Zinkie prepared a set of six covers, each bearing a different denomination of the Pan-American commemorative set. The covers were postmarked on November 1, with one of the rarest types of flag machine cancels, an Exposition slogan type assigned the catalog number B01-19 (originally B01-20C) in William J. Bomar's "Postal Markings of United States Expositions." The set remained intact until it was split up beginning in 1947. The current owner spent more than two decades locating and acquiring the individual covers to reassemble the rare set.
Also offered in Mehrer's sale is a newly discovered example of the famous and fabulous "Eagle and Thunderbolt" American machine cancel, tying a red two-cent Washington on a full cover with an advertising corner card. The killer portion of the spectacular cancel features an eagle's head profile and the numeral "1" in a five-point star, surrounded by several thunderbolts. It was used in a trial test for one day - January 2, 1895 - in Boston, MA. Of the 10,000 pieces of mail that passed through the machine that day, it is believed that fewer than a dozen have survived.
The catalog includes hundreds of covers and cards bearing classic U.S. Navy ship cancels from a 30-year collection. Featured are a rare 4-bar postmark from the U.S.S. Oregon, and a 3-bar postmark from the U.S.S. Rijndam, which is believed to be unique.
The "First Day Covers and Early Usages" section of the sale contains a one-cent parcel post stamp (Scott Q1) canceled on July 1, 1913, which was the first day that such stamps were permitted on first class mail. The "Stamps on Cover" section contains a one-cent Washington (Scot 408) with the U.S. Automatic Vending Machine Company's private perforations Type II, used on a picture postcard.
Among the hundreds of auxiliary markings in the catalog is the very rare "Mail Injured / by Pneumatic Tube / Illinois Cent.Tube Station." hand stamp, applied in Chicago, IL, on a picture postcard from Seattle, WA, to Grand Rapids, MI, in 1909. The newly discovered example is believed to be just the second such copy known.
Jim Mehrer's Postal History Mail Bid Sale #135 contains more than 8,100 lots, nearly all which are individually described items. The sale runs from October 6 through November 28, during which time it will be posted on Mehrer's web site at www.postal-history.com. Printed copies of the catalog are available for $5.00 to U.S. addresses and $15.00 outside the U.S. Order from: Jim Mehrer's Postal History, 2405-30th Street, Rock Island, IL 61201.
