Postal History Rarities in Jim Mehrer's Sale #137
Several rare postal history items are offered in Jim Mehrer's Postal History Mail Bid Sale #137, which is now in progress.
Among the lots listed is a cover bearing Abraham Lincoln’s autograph signature endorsement. Postmarked in Bloomington, IL, on December 31, 1862, the cover contains a letter with the sender’s request for a military commission. It was sent to Assistant Supreme Court Judge David Davis, who referred it to the President. Lincoln signed the face of the cover, passing it along to the Secretary of War. The cover and the accompanying letter are listed as lot PO-13 in the “Political” section of the catalog.
Other Lincoln-related items offered in Mehrer's sale are several illustrated campaign covers (some with Lincoln’s clean-shaven image) and a CDV card with his portrait “From a Photographic Negative in (Matthew) Brady's National Portrait Gallery.”
The “Airmail” section of the catalog includes nine items with early “Pioneer Flight” postmarks. Three are from the rare 1914 Fair Grounds Aviation Meet in Clayton, NM, on related real photo postcards.
The sale includes hundreds of covers and cards bearing classic U.S. Navy ship cancels from a 30-year collection. Featured are a U.S.S. Pensacola receiving postmark dated December 20, 1908, and rare early postmarks from ships such as the U.S.S. Great Northern, Patuxent and Potomac.
The "First Day Covers and Early Usages" section of the sale contains a cover bearling three of the 50-cent Graf Zeppelin airmail stamps, postmarked on October 2, 1933. The "Stamps on Cover" category contains a strip of three one-cent Franklins from the 1869 pictorial series (Scott 112) paying the first-class cover rate.
Among the hundreds of items bearing auxiliary markings is a postcard mailed from Denmark to England in 1916, with an attached label reading “Part of a Mail Captured by the Germans and Delayed.”
In total, the sale contains more than 8,300 lots, nearly all which are individually described items, including more than 160 entries in the “Picture Postcards” section.Jim Mehrer's Postal History Mail Bid Sale #137 closes on January 28 at 10 PM Central Time.
